Recovering at Home after Sclerotherapy? Here Are Our Top Tips
Many people resume normal activities a day after sclerotherapy, but it can take several weeks for the body to fully heal. Here are some tips to help promote healing and prevent complications during your recovery.

Sclerotherapy is a common procedure that treats varicose and spider veins in the legs. The 15 to 30-minute procedure helps relieve aching, burning, and swelling caused by the varicose and spider veins. David D. Shin, MD, RVT, RPVI, FACS, and the dedicated team of medical professionals at Houston Vein Specialists in Houston, Texas, offer the following tips to ensure a smooth and successful recovery.

1. Follow post-procedure instructions

Dr. Shin and his team provide detailed post-procedure instructions specifically tailored to your situation. Following the instructions, which may include wearing compression stockings and avoiding strenuous activities, helps minimize potential complications.

2. Elevate your legs

Swelling and discomfort is common during the first few days following sclerotherapy. Keeping your legs elevated above heart level for 15-20 minutes, several times per day, can reduce swelling and help promote blood flow back to your heart.

3. Stay active with light exercise

While we advise against engaging in strenuous activities immediately after sclerotherapy, light exercises such as walking are highly beneficial. Gentle movements aid in improving circulation, preventing blood clots, and reducing the risk of complications. However, be sure to consult with our medical team before resuming any exercise routine.

4. Avoid excessive sun exposure

Protecting your legs from prolonged sun exposure is critical. The UV rays from the sun can negatively impact the treated veins and the surrounding skin. If you plan to spend time outdoors, consider wearing sunscreen with a high SPF and covering your legs with loose-fitting clothing.

5. Maintain a healthy diet

Maintaining a balanced diet is essential for your health at all times, but it is even more important during sclerotherapy recovery. Focus on consuming foods rich in vitamins C and E and antioxidants to promote tissue repair and reduce inflammation.

6. Keep your legs moisturized

Your skin might feel dry and sensitive after sclerotherapy. Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer regularly to hydrate your legs and prevent itching or irritation, but avoid applying moisturizer directly to injection sites until they are fully healed.

7. Be patient with the results

While you may notice some improvement immediately after the procedure, it's important to remember that complete sclerotherapy results may take several weeks. Be patient and allow your body ample time to heal.
